Choosing the Right Path: Growing a Clinical Pathways Program

This presentation outlines how a large health system successfully built and scaled a clinical pathways program to improve quality, reduce variation, and close the gap between evidence and practice. It highlights the foundational role of interdisciplinary teams, structured processes, and continuous measurement, along with the operational infrastructure needed to sustain growth. Through real-world examples, it demonstrates how standardized pathways, thoughtful prioritization, and ongoing review can drive meaningful improvements in outcomes, efficiency, and care delivery across diverse clinical settings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline the critical infrastructure required to support and sustain a successful pathways program.
  • Examine tools and methods to guide prioritization of pathway development, updates, and retirement.
  • Illustrate strategies for conducting systematic reviews of clinical pathways and decision support resources.
