Metrics 101

This session explores the role of quality metrics in clinical pathway programs, with a focus on how to “measure wisely” by selecting meaningful, actionable metrics that align with clinical goals. Attendees will learn how to effectively present data through clear, impactful infographics to support clinician engagement and understanding, and will gain practical strategies for using pathway performance data to drive continuous improvement and optimize patient care.

About the Presenters

Mario A Reyes

Mario A. Reyes, MD

Senior Pediatric Hospitalist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital

Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Program

Dr Reyes is currently a Senior Pediatric Hospitalist at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami Florida, where he has been practicing for more than 25 years. He graduated initially as a Sub-Specialist on Neonatology and Perinatology in the University of Havana, Cuba, and completed post-graduate education at the University of Miami School of Medicine and Miami Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Program. He is Board Certified in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. He has held multiple clinical and administrative leadership positions, including PHM Division Director for 15 years and Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Program at Niclaus Children’s Hospital for the last 8 years. He is a founder member of the AAP SOHM and has been involved in multiple national QI collaboratives and research projects within the CHA, resulting in several publications in high-impact journals on measuring low-value care, quality of care of pediatric respiratory illnesses, and healthcare utilization during COVID19. He has been working with Pathways4Kids since its inception.

Dr. Ilana Waynik is a pediatric hospitalist at Connecticut Children’s and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. She has advanced quality improvement training and is a Lean Black Belt. Dr. Waynik is the Director of Clinical Effectiveness at Connecticut Children’s. She has published and presented research focused on effects of clinical pathways and led workshops on clinical pathway development at a number of national academic meetings. She is a QI coach for the Organizational Excellence course at her institution and has served as coach for several AAP Pediatric and Critical Care Quality Network initiatives.
